The EarthDaily Monitor Sept 2026: El Niño, Wildfire Intelligence, Maritime Visibility and GeoAI

In August, El Niño strengthened, extreme heat cut into Europe’s harvest outlook and shifting rainfall patterns increased uncertainty across other major producing regions. The pressure extended beyond crop conditions into food supply chains, with consequences for food security in communities with little capacity to absorb another disruption.

Wildfires forced evacuations across multiple regions while GeoAI and persistent gaps in maritime visibility raised demand for consistent, broad-area data. Across all four signals, the operational question is the same: what is changing, where is it changing and how quickly is the risk escalating?

01    Lead Signal

El Niño is creating sharply different weather risks across major agricultural regions.

What is changing: Those conditions are increasing uncertainty across food supply chains. Reuters turned to EarthDaily in August for the latest assessment of where the strengthening pattern is putting harvests under the most pressure. In a C3 Newsmag piece, EarthDaily Crop Analyst Felippe Reis explains that the forecasting challenge is identifying which indicator matters at each crop stage and whether changing weather is beginning to affect crop performance.

Where it is showing: Australia and southern Brazil remain two regions to watch, with increasing dryness in Australia and excessive rainfall across Brazil’s wheat belt. EarthDaily’s August World in 10 provides the wider crop picture across other major producing regions. These remain developing risks. The next few weeks will show whether they translate into changes in yield, grain quality or harvest timing.


Why it matters:
Regional losses in yield or grain quality can tighten availability and move quickly through prices, sourcing decisions and food-security risk.

 

02    Wildfire Intelligence

Wildfire Intelligence Has to Work Before and After Ignition

Wildfire intelligence now has to support decisions from pre-ignition risk assessment through post-fire recovery.

Before ignition: EarthDaily announced an agreement with a large North American property and casualty insurance group to deploy its Fire Likelihood AI Model (FLAIM) across high-risk western U.S. markets. The model combines satellite observations, daily weather and geospatial information to support underwriting, portfolio management, and conflagration and aggregation risk assessment.

After ignition: For recent fires across the United States, Spain and Canada, EarthDaily’s automated EarthPlatform workflow produced updated burn-severity assessments within minutes of the latest satellite acquisition. The workflow can be rerun as new observations arrive, allowing damage intelligence to keep pace with an evolving emergency.


Why it matters:
Earlier intelligence can inform risk decisions before ignition and accelerate salvage, recovery and claims decisions after damage occurs.

 

03    Maritime Visibility

AIS Leaves a Discovery Gap at Sea

Maritime visibility depends on detecting vessel activity and coastal change beyond what reported AIS data alone can reveal.

The gap: AIS depends on vessels broadcasting accurate information. Ships can switch it off, manipulate transmissions or operate without broadcasting. Changes affecting ports, coastlines and subsea infrastructure may produce no AIS signal at all.

At operational scale: Persistent satellite monitoring provides a broad-area discovery layer. In August, SynMax announced that it is integrating EarthDaily Constellation imagery into Theia, its maritime intelligence product. Fused with AIS and other sources, daily analysis-ready coverage will provide a more complete and current view of maritime activity.


Why it matters:
Without a discovery layer beyond AIS, unreported vessel activity and changes affecting critical coastal infrastructure can remain outside the reported picture.

 

04    AI-Ready Measurements

GeoAI Is Raising the Standard for Earth Observation Data

GeoAI is expanding automated analysis across geospatial workflows, placing greater demands on the data beneath every result.

The standard: EarthDaily Federal President Nicole Toigo argues in SpaceNews that national-security applications require observations that are calibrated, consistent, comparable over time and ready for AI systems. Changes in sensors, viewing angles, acquisition timing or processing can otherwise be mistaken for changes on the ground.

In practice: SMATAK, an EarthDaily-led border-monitoring demonstration with Defence Research and Development Canada and the RCMP, will combine daily satellite data, AI-powered change detection and operational alerting tools to move potential changes from detection to analysts and simulated field users.


Why it matters:
AI can scale geospatial analysis only when the measurements underneath remain calibrated, comparable and traceable across sensors and time.

Following the public release of provisional NISAR L-band data, EarthDaily established a live stream into EarthOne, making the products available alongside Sentinel-1, SMAP and other widely used datasets.


Why it matters: Bringing complementary observations together makes it easier to compare measurements and develop multi-source workflows for surface change, soil moisture and land.
